FM 9-6 is a field manual published by Headquarters, Department of the Army which prescribes doctrine for munitions support. This manual addresses missions, operations and interactions between different levels of munitions support. The purpose of this publication is to explain in general terms how munitions units operate and how they interact with each other to provide ammunition to users.

This FM also introduces two very important doctrinal changes; firstly it incorporates maneuver oriented ammunition distribution system (MOADS) into its structure as army doctrine allowing extensive use of palletized loads for distribution purposes; secondly it presents modular platoon concept consisting heavy lift platoons (HLP) best suited for port operations and medium lift platoons (MLPs) designed specifically for operating Ammunition Supply Points (ASPs).

The type and number of these platoons deployed depends on mission enemy troops terrain weather time available(METT-T). Modular units are flexible enough to be tailored according theatre commander's intent while giving them capability expand or contract their supply capabilities when needed.
